Near Malton North Yorkshire
For anyone looking for quiet, unspoilt countryside, Ryedale would be difficult to better, having some first class farming in a very much alive rural area, bounded by the Wolds, the Howardian Hills and to the north, the Moors with their own dales, each one full of character.
Our area is full of interest for anyone. Just a few miles to the north is Pickering, the gateway to the North York Moors National Park and terminus of the N.Y.M Railway over the moors to Grosmont and Whitby. Nearby are Castle Howard and other stately homes well worth a visit, whilst the ruined Abbeys at Kirkham, Byland and Rievaulx lie in peaceful settings and can make lovely places in which to have your picnic.
All the old North and East Yorkshire towns and villages of character lie within easy reach of Swans Nest Cottage.
Thornton Dale, Helmsley, Kirbymoorside, Ampltforth, Hovingham, Driffield, Beverly and many others, all with a good real ale pub if you care for refreshment.
And, of course there is York. A beautiful city full of life along its old streets, with fascinating old pubs, trendy new boutiques, the Minster and the Theatre Royal within the ancient city walls. The Castle Museum near Cliffords Tower shows how life in York streets used to be a century and more ago, and the National Railway Museum could not be more suitable sited than next to the main line in a City that is still making railway history and from where you can travel by train, via Malton, to the coast at Scarborough.
If you fancy a day at the seaside you can reach the coast at Scarborough, Filey, Bridlington and Whitby in just over half an hour.
Much closer to home is the old North Riding market town of Malton, with its colourful history dating back to before Roman times.
